The Place To Find The Best Indie Artists

Christine Jackson

Every so often you someone who unwittingly inspires you, just by being themselves. Christine Jackson is that type of person. It wasn’t known how much she’s been through at the time of our connecting but as we have come to know, everyone has a story.

Christine 1

Before and After

Christine’s is one of overcoming. When her son was diagnosed with Autism at 18 months, Christine went into a downward spiral. Although she was not formally diagnosed, she was certainly suffering from depression. She was petite but says she has never been “skinny” but doing that time she gain in excess of 350 pounds and ended up in a wheelchair because she had destroyed the cartilage in her knees.

Christine 2

Before and After

Having thrown herself into the world of Autism and being an advocate for her son, she let her health go and she was informed by doctors that she was a time bomb for a stoke or a heart attack. She was told she would probably die young. Not being able to walk and take care of her son, she knew she had to do something.

Since 2011, she changed her mindset by losing weight, to be able to get out of the wheelchair and take care of her son. She is now 150+ pounds lighter. Her change was not just physical, but mental and spiritual too.  This where the real journey began. Today she has her own PR firm and is the President of Revolution Entertainment Group LLC. Please take a listen to the inspiring interview and connect with her on Facebook

Gwendolyn Collins

I first met Ms. Collins in October of 2013. She was supporting other Indie Artists at a showcase in Washington, DC. I became aware of her because of a friend who was visiting. He heard her voice and said to me that he would love to have her do a drop for his Radio station in the UK. I convinced him to ask her and we found out that she was also an Indie Artist in her own right. Carl had offered her his phone to record on. She said that she would do the drops for him and for me and send them to our respective email addresses, which she did as well as a few of her tracks. Once I heard her sing, I was an instant fan. Gwendolyn is sweet, talented and down to earth.

It is incredulous to me that she she has only been a solo Artist since August 2013. She is a generous performer, who happily shares the stage with her talented friends. If she ever comes to your town, be sure to get your ticket. It  was such a pleasure speaking with Gwendolyn on Conversations. The interview below is from January 11, 2014. She has been on the show since then and I can hardly wait to share the second one with you, but for now, enjoy this one and then visit her website, Befriend her on Facebook, follow her on Twitter and most importantly, add her music to your personal music library.

Everything In Its Time

This is a statement of how I am feeling right now. I am so grateful to God  for grace and mercy. I just have to take a pause and thank Him. I see how far he’s brought me . Only I can know where my journey has brought me from, God knows the path I am traveling, I will continue to let Him and His Son, and the Holy Spirit guide me and I will continue to follow their  lead as to which move I need to make when. Doing so has not failed me so far. Hallelujah!

God won't Fail

Of course, I am so anxious to get started providing services to children. I really wanted to be ready to start at least for limited hours through out the summer with at least Dance and Piano lessons, Of course, everything happens as it is supposed to, according to His will on His timetable. This walk is certainly teaching me this lesson. I have no doubt it will all happen as God has shown me,  I am like a kid waiting for Christmas. I must be patient. I know there are still things to do and people to put in place and so I have to take a step back and let my Father do his thing.

Even as I am writing this blog, The Spirit  has brought to my remembrance, the childhood friend I ran into a year ago. I stopped to give him a call before it got too late and look at God! I might have a viable space to hold charity events to benefit Children’s World of Music. I have a meeting next week with the Dance Program Director and he just happens to be a great manager/promoter. I am feeling so much joy as I finish this entry. God is so good to me, even when I am going through, I am smiling. I smile because I am happy. I smile because I am glad. If his eye is on the  sparrow, then I know He watches me!

Twalla Jaye

I have a talented friend who has an Indie Record Label called Cirius Entertainment Group. When Markkii Notes contacted me about Ms. Twalla Jaye, I fell in  love with her voice and had to book her on Conversations. I must say, she is as real and down to earth as she sounded singing Fortify Me, a gospel song and her first single release.

Twalla B&W

Twalla Jaye hails from Hopkins, South Carolina where she sang in her church choir, the church where her grandfather, presided. She began performing backup vocals professionally at 14 years old. Ultimately, she wants to reach more than just her fellow Christians and gospel fans; She wants her gift to be heard and spread through the masses.

walla singing in the church choir afforded her the opportunity to perform at the McDonalds Series in 2011, at the Township Auditorium in Columbia SC, where her choir was chosen out of a group of over thirty choirs to perform with Dr. Paul Morton. She has also had the opportunity to work with Blanche Mcallister Dykes of the ‘Tri City Singers’. Twalla is no stranger to the stage or performing solo. She has also performed at ‘Family Fest 2011’, Jazz Fest 2011, and the Annual McDonalds Choir Showcase 2011. Twalla currently showcases her skills weekly as the director of the Grace Church Choir.

When she visited Conversations, she shared the inspiration for the song, Stop Playing Games, she is truly a woman reborn and we like her. We think you will too.  Take a listen to the interview and then go buy her music, you really need to have it in your collection.

Learning to play flute at the tender age of seven, the Houston native’s formative years found her firmly rooted in many musical traditions, including classical, Broadway musicals, soul, gospel, 80’s rock, and opera. Some of her mentors included world-renowned flutists Hubert Laws and Marina Piccinini. Having graduated from Prairie View A&M University and The Peabody Conservatory of Music, Delandria’s impeccable ability earned her numerous awards including top prize at the International Association of Jazz Educators’ Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Competition in 2005, resulting in a European tour.

Delandria’s love of music, education, and passion for success led her to develop the Kingdom Flute Works Summer Camp, “The Global Presents” ensemble, and a groundbreaking trio of recordings in 2010- Kingdom Goes Classical, Be Happy, and the Be Opened EP. Her latest project “Be Opened”, is a hip hop (expression) EP of her soon to be released LP, entitled, “Ephphatha”. Ephphatha will be a collaboration with some of today’s major hip hop artists, and represents Delandria’s openness to creativity, freedom of spirituality, and rebirth of original music. Along with “Kingdom Flute Works”, Delandria teaches Jazz & Classical Flute instruction in the Preparatory Department of the Peabody Conservatory of Music. In addition to teaching and her own recordings, Delandria has toured, recorded, and performed with numerous musical greats such as: Jazz legends Billy Harper and Hubert Laws, and a number of Gospel artists such as; Tye Tribbett, Fertile Ground, Mary Mary, Israel & New Breed, and Judith Christie McAllister.

Growth vs New Beginning

Some folks would call it a new beginning, I think there might be some justification in that, however, I prefer to look at it as  continuing growth. We have big plans for WDGP. The sky  isn’t even the limit. We have no limit as long as we keep God first in all, we will continue to prosper and be a blessing to others. We are so thankful to all the Artists and Listeners who have helped us get to this point. We want to be more and do more and have big ideas to do so. Yes, that’s the goal – Keep growing and learning and blessing others. Hold on to your seats, it’s going to be an exciting ride!
